Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. Enrollment is restricted by permission of the instructor. The course explores the historical and political contexts of the U.S. presidential primary campaigning. It investigates how the primary process impacts the types of candidates who run for office, how it impacts the strategies those candidates adopt in the early stages of their campaigns versus later stages and how it impacts the ways candidates seek out money, media coverage and grassroots organizing in order to gain momentum in a primary campaign.
