Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online). 3 credits. Enrollment is restricted to students admitted to the graduate program or by permission of the instructor. Emphasizes a comprehensive examination of current and proposed healthcare policies and their impact on clinical practice, the healthcare workforce and population health. Policies are examined through the lens of contextual factors such as social justice, access to care and health equity, to highlight ethical and legal issues associated with the cost and quality of health care. Strategies for policy development, policy analysis, economic analysis, policy evaluation, advocacy and communication are examined. Economic principles including healthcare markets, competition, financing, reimbursement and regulation are presented to guide decision-making and emphasize the importance of cost-effective healthcare policy development.
