Catalog description

Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online). 3 credits. Prerequisite: NURS 686 or by permission of the instructor. The course provides an in-depth understanding of health care database systems which is integral to modern health care information systems (e.g., electronic health records). Students will gain foundational knowledge on how data are queried, captured, stored, processed and retrieved in health care database systems. Practical applications of database design, implementation and management will be examined, with a focus on ensuring the accuracy, privacy and security of patient data. Topics covered include data structures and modeling, database normalization, data mining, big data and clinical decision support systems to address problems in health care settings.
