Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online). 3 credits. The course focuses on preparing nurse leaders to understand and support the continuous professional development of the nurse workforce within healthcare organizations. Continuing professional development will be presented in the context of the science of competency development, regulatory standards related to competence assessment, the role of nurse leaders in creating a culture of lifelong learning and establishing effective organizational structures to support CPD. Emphasis is placed on strategies such as transition to practice programs, nursing education/professional development departments, competency assessment programs, preceptor programs and tuition reimbursement benefits.
