Semester course; 3 lecture hours. 3 credits. Microfluidics is an upper-level course to dive into the field of “lab-on-a-chip” or "microphysiological" systems. The course will explore the origins of the field of microfluidics as well as how microfluidic technologies have penetrated into other seemingly unrelated fields to advance research and clinical care. The course will also will investigate how microfluidic models are synthesized and manufactured, and students will learn how to identify optimal manufacturing methods depending on the applications. Also studied is how the field has used microfluidics for cell sorting, high-throughput applications, drug delivery and therapy analysis, diagnostics, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and to mimic tissue or organ systems. Students will have the opportunity to both lead and participate in insightful discussions based on knowledge gained through lectures.
