Intimate Partner Violence Policy and Practice.

Catalog description

Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online). 3 credits. Enrollment is restricted to upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level criminal justice majors, as well as students enrolled in the gender violence intervention certificate program. Students will learn about multiple forms of interpersonal violence including domestic and dating violence, stalking, sexual assault and human trafficking. The course will focus on theories of interpersonal violence, latest trends and prevalence rates, and specific policies and practices of various systems that have been developed to address this problem. The course takes an intersectionality and social justice approach investigating the ways in which specific policies and practices (e.g., mandatory arrest and failure to protect) affect various communities in particular ways, through a critical analysis of structural inequalities, underlying assumptions, political motivations and unintended consequences. Students will also examine the criminalization of interpersonal violence and learn about critiques of and alternatives to this approach, including restorative and transformative justice.
