Catalog description

Semester course; 3 lecture hours (delivered online, face-to-face or hybrid). 3 credits. To understand the forces shaping contemporary student educational experiences, students will explore the ecology of the public school system and the communities in which they are embedded with particular attention to the historical and structural context of racial inequity in public education. Students will investigate the role of public governance and the influence of community engagement, organizing and advocacy in shaping educational experiences, and outcomes. By applying course concepts to their own individual and collective educational experiences, students will build engagement and leadership capacity for a more equity-oriented and culturally relevant education system. Students will explore avenues for authentic youth engagement to shape education policy and apply skills to advance educational equity, opportunity and achievement with a focus on historically marginalized stakeholder groups. Graded as pass/fail.
