Correlation of the mechanical, electrical and optical properties of different material systems such as metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers to the microstructure of the material; 3. How material properties are influenced by thermal and mechanical treatments; 4. Strengthening mechanisms in materials; 5. The effects of the environment on materials and the possible failure modes of structures; 6. Application of material systems in photonics, microelectronics, and other technology fields; 7. Design limitation for metal alloys, ceramics, semiconductors and polymers; 8. Application of materials design concepts to selecting the material most suitable for a given application.
