Methods of reading in the elementary school is a course designed to teach pre-service teachers the fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of language. This course is built upon the foundations of reading and students will acquire the knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences of language, understand the relationship of phonemic awareness, and the phonological system of language related to the reading process. Students will also study the six syllable types, syllabication of multisyllabic words, and be introduced to the role of morphology and etymology in decoding and encoding. Students will learn to apply the principles of explicit and systematic instruction when planning and teaching reading. This learning structure also embeds the concepts of reading difficulties, use of technology in literacy, and meeting the needs of culturally diverse and special needs students. Typically Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer. Prerequisites : Admitted to Teacher Education, EDUC 321 .
