Prerequisite(s): ( PHIL 1000 or PHIL 1000H or PHIL 2050 or PHIL 2050H or PHIL 2050G or PHIL 2110 or PHIL 2150 or Instructor Approval) and University Advanced Standing Studies the interpretive methods of deconstruction and hermeneutics, two important traditions to emerge in late 20th century philosophy. Analyzes various works from the history of philosophy through the frameworks of deconstruction and hermeneutics. Tracks the difference between knowledge and understanding, particularly through the writings of Jacques Derrida and Hans-Georg Gadamer. Includes the study of other relevant traditions such as post-structuralism, French feminism, and literary criticism.
