NETWORKING FUNDAMENTALS

Catalog description
Three credit-hours. Three hours of lecture per week. This course introduces participants to the key concepts of data communications, telecommunications, networking, technologies, components, and protocols used in local area networking (LAN) and wide area networking (WAN) environments. Students will learn about the popul ar LAN protocols of Ethernet, Token Ring, and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), with emphasis on all speeds of Ethernet. This course also introduces the most widely used network operating systems. Basic network design and security concepts are discussed. Students will have an opportunity to hone their analytical skills and will use computer tools to analyze problems associated with the transport of data over the Internet.
