LITERATURE OF THE PUERTO RICAN DIASPORA

This course examines the different periods of literary production by Puerto Ricans in the United States from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. A variety of literary genres are studied on topics such as colonization, migration, identity, soc ial class, race, language, gender, displacement, nation, and hybridity. The course analyzes literature on the migratory experience written by Puerto Ricans on the island and outside it in different historical periods, and how diaspora literature represents a challenge to the colonial and national canon of Puerto Rico. From the perspective of cultural studies, postcolonial and subaltern literary and discursive theories relevant to textual analysis are studied.
