Catalog description
The teaching of patient-centered care begins in the first year of the UAGM SDM curricular program with emphasis on student learning of the foundational knowledge and skills needed for effective patient interviewing, examination, behavioral management, and on the basic knowledge required to work safely in the clinical environment. DMCC 703 is the first part of the two -part Comprehensive Adult Dental Clinic I and II course. It starts immediately after the students’ first direct contact with patients during th e last term of the second year of the program (Foundation to Clinical Dentistry, course code DMCC 702). It marks the beginning of a designed curricular shift on the balance of instructional content from theoretical and academic science to practical and cl inical experiences that the dental student leverages through participation in the UAGM Comprehensive Patient Management and Care Program (CPMC Program, described below) as member of one of three Comprehensive Patient Management and Care Teams (CPMC Team, description below) and through completion of scheduled complementary clinical rotations. The course emphasizes student -centered active learning through processes consisting of examination, evidence -based knowledge integration, reflection, and self-assessment as it relates to comprehensive patient -centered management and care. Students report to their assigned CPMC Team from where, for the remainder of their DMD program, they must meet all the comprehensive care needs of their patients through examination, evaluation, treatment planning and delivery of care to the extent of their training, including recognition of patient complexity, self-limitations and execution of referrals when indicated. The CPMC Team faculty thus supervise a combination o f junior and senior dental students who also draw educational benefit from direct interactions with their peers, dental assistants, and other supporting personnel, as well as from opportunities for interdisciplinary and interprofessional consultation and collaboration.
