Catalog description
The Organic Chemistry II course studies aspects related to the structure, nomenclature and physical properties of: epoxides, aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Scientific reasoning skills are developed in the study of synthesis methods and their reactions. Organometallic compound reactions: Grignard, Corey reagent, coupling reactions: Heck and Suzuki. Emphasis is placed on reaction mechanisms, especially: SN1, SN2, E-1, E-2, radical substitutions, electrophilic a romatic substitutions in benzene and its derivatives, dehydration of alcohols, hydrolysis of carboxylic acid derivatives, esterification, saponification, condensation aldol, Cannizzaro reaction, Sandmeyer reaction and the Cope and Hofmann amine elimination reaction. In the area of polymers, molecules of biological origin are discussed for the construction of biopolymers, the most relevant reactions in the synthesis of synthetic polymers, physical properties and current uses. In the laboratory, information s kills are observed in the use of the physical and chemical parameters necessary for the synthesis, purification, separation and characterization techniques of organic compounds. Through the synthesis the student can better understand the reactions discussed in class, the specific reagents and conditions required for each experiment. The student will be trained in the correct use of different equipment and glassware. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
