Catalog description

The Microbial Physiology and Genetics undergraduate course will offer the students the general concepts related to cell structure and function, metabolism and gene regulation in bacteria. These concepts include transport systems, catabolism and anabolism, cell division, photosynthesis, genome structure, extrachromosomal DNA elements, DNA mutation, and gene expression control. The laboratory experiences will focus on (1) substrate utilization during catabolism in bacteria, (2) natural and artificial competen cy to acquire foreign DNA and (3) strategies for cloning so that the students learn how to manipulate DNA and study gene regulation and expression in vitro. The course consists of 45 hours of lectures and 45 hours of laboratory.
