Catalog description

This is an introductory microbiology course intended for undergraduate nursing students. The course provides the student with the fundamental concepts of microbiology in order to develop skills and competencies necessary for their effective and safe performance in the clinical-hospital setting. The student will be able to explore topics related to the morphology, physiology, biochemistry, metabolism and genetics of microorganisms. The student will have the opportunity to visit the diversity of representativ e members of microorganisms such as: bacteria, algae, protozoa and viruses. Similarly, the student will learn about the roles of microorganisms in health, diseases and modes of transmission. Topics on concepts related to microbial control, microbe -host interactions, epidemiology, emerging diseases, principles of immunology and some microbiological applications are included. The laboratory component provides the student with practical skills related to aseptic technique, disinfection, isolation and cultivation of microorganisms, microbial control, microscopy techniques and stains, among other applications related to human and veterinary health. The course includes activities and the study of situations aimed at developing critical thinking skills that allow the student to propose solutions to current problems based on quantitative and scientific reasoning. Also, emphasis is placed on the development of appropriate communication skills, and the correct handling of technological equipment and programs specific to the field of microbiology.
