This course touches upon the general ethical understandings and dilemmas present in society. The focus of its thematic content is on the ethical and professional obligations related to the practice of dental medicine and other health professions, such as defining the role of the five fundamental principles of professional ethics: patient autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, veracity, and justice. The course centers around ensuring students' understanding and compliance with the principles of ethics and codes of professional conduct established by the profession and all other applicable local, federal, and institutional standards establ ished in corresponding policies and procedures. By the culmination of this course, the students should have also developed skills that should help them recognize, interpret, analyze, and resolve ethical dilemmas present in their practice and in the profes sion. DMPD 702 INTRODUCTION TO INTERPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION IN HEALTHCARE TEAM 1 CREDIT This Universidad Ana G. Mendez (UAGM) institutional course is rooted in the core concept that no single profession can optimize patient care. Participation of currently committed UAGM academic programs (nursing, speech pathology, naturopathic medicine, nutrition, clinical psychology, clinical social worker, and dentistry) set the stage for the development of future ready UAGM graduates that are poised to engage in collaborative practices across multiple professional fields in support of favorable health outcomes and the mitigation of health disparities. The course prepares the general dentistry student (and students of other participating health service programs) with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for collaborative interprofessional practice. Students develop an understanding of their own profession and professional identity while also understanding the roles of other professionals through teamwork regarding patient care and healthcare management. The course ultimately instills in the developing dentist, interdisciplinarity as an important collaborative tool to address the complex and challenging needs of care at the individual, family, and community level.
