Catalog description

This course provides knowledge about prokaryotic life forms, such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, viroids, and prions. The focus of the course leads to a proper understanding of the host -microbe interactions of the different human infectious diseases, host defense mechanisms, and understanding the basic characteristics of these agents for an effective diagnosis and development of a treatme nt plan. Clinical correlations in the course emphasize applying the basic structure and function of different oral cavity microbes capable of systemic interactions that can affect other organ systems and interrelate with oral health. In addition, the course contains a laboratory experience focused on culture and staining techniques, methods for microbial identification, and differential growth processes using and building upon the knowledge acquired in the biochemistry course. Likewise, the Laboratory exper ience emphasizes maintaining proper safety methods and aseptic techniques in the laboratory and a professional clinical environment.
