Catalog description

In-depth analysis of the use of prisons as the primary means of inflicting punishment on the criminal and the offender. As a central aspect of the course, special emphasis is placed on the study of the phenomenon of punishment and its historical, philosoph ical, cultural, social and economic development, among others. In turn, we examine the assumptions that seek to validate the decision of what human behavior constitutes a crime, as well as the type of punishment to be applied. Similarly, the goals, history, practices and clients of the Correction System are studied. The course also discusses the role of the police, investigators, courts, correctional institution administrators in relation to the life of the confined; as well as the public policy, the purposes, effectiveness and efficiency of the offender's rehabilitation programs and their involvement in the binomial relationship: crime/punishment. Finally, the similarities and differences between various correction systems will be established, and the role played in relation to them by the Criminal Justice System.
