MECHANICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN

Catalog description

Major design experience of an engineering system, including completion of a semester -long design project, engineering design techniques and methodology. There will be emphasis in the use of critical thinking by developing a semester long design to solve a complex problem using engineering design methodologies such as System’s Engineering. Quantitative reasoning will be used for statics, dynamics, kinematic, stress, and selection analysis previously learned in other fundamental engineering courses. Scientifi c reasoning will be of paramount importance in the use of analytical tools, derived from fundamental principles of physics. Communication will be essential in the creation of oral presentations, written reports, posters, and engineering drawings in order t o establish a clear description of objectives, procedures, and results. Technological competence will be required in the use of tools such as Power Point, Excel, Word, Solid Works (or any other available FEM software), and databases for reference research. This course will emphasize the ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations to make informed judgments that must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts. Information skill will be important so the student can obtain access to relevant material by performing market studies, literature research, and information about engineering standards. Innovation will be expected when defining the project significance to design a product that is different from already available ones in the market.
