ENVIRONMENTAL RISK MANAGEMENT

Catalog description

The course familiarizes the students with concepts and strategies that are applied to prevent and manage environmental and occupational risks. The course emphasizes the methodology used and regulated by the USA federal regulatory agencies to evaluate environmental and occupation al scenarios with the purpose of predicting or estimating potential adverse effects on human and ecosystems. The method identified as "Risk Management Plan" is applied in accordance with the environmental protection agency (EPA). The student applies this method and concepts to different types of industrial sector or type in order to estimate the worst possible scenario and its environmental risks. Once the worst -case scenario is identified, control strategies, emergency agen cies and remediation are established. The student becomes familiar and learns how to use different data banks and electronic resources with valuable environmental control information such as the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). TRI is an inventory of industrial chemical emissions as documented by multiple type industries in Puerto Rico and the United States. The use of this inventory allows the comparison of emissions between states and years.
