Catalog description
Fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics and applications to engineering problems. Fluid statics; integral form for control volumes (conservation of mass, momentum equation, Bernoulli equation); differential form (conservation of mass and an introduction to the Navier -Stokes equation), dimensional analysis. Calculation of head loss in pipes; introduction to boundary layers, and lift and drag forces. Students will develop the critical thinking, information skills, a nd quantitative reasoning required to study the behavior of a fluid in a system. For example, in the calculation of the power required by a pump for a specific application.
