Catalog description

A series of lectures and case discussions dealing with medical diseases of horses. The goal of this course is to enable students acquire knowledge and skills in history taking, physical examination, selection and completion of appropriate ancillary tests, diagnosis, treatment, and equine patient care. Daily rounds and discussions are used to monitor patient progress and further educate students. The emphasis of this course is on enhancing and deepening knowledge gained in the equine surgery core course in preparation for clinical rotations. This is primarily achieved through lecture style format and case discussions. Case discussions will follow a format like clinic rounds, and the quality of discussion in class will largely depend on student preparation, participation and enthusiasm. A set of case files will be distributed by instructor ahead of class sessions (through posting on the course website). Case files will include case information such as history, physical examination findings and results of routine blood work, as well as a set of specific questions to guide students through their work -up. Students are expected to answer que stions as best they can ahead of class discussions but are not expected to arrive for the class with a definitive diagnosis or a treatment plan. The information provided in the case files may be intentionally incomplete to allow for discussion in class. At the end of each class session, students should be able to provide the answer to all questions in the respective case file. These questions are those veterinarians have to ask (and answer) about every single case they see; they are very relevant and practical and not just “academic”.
