Catalog description

In this interdisciplinary case presentation course students generate patient -centered comprehensive treatment plans for their assigned patients as they apply the knowledge acquired in all the applicable dental disciplines, biomedical and behavioral sciences courses, and review of evidence -based knowledge, while also following strict principles of ethical decision -making and professional responsibility. T he student formulates rationalized patient diagnosis from the interpretation of the patient’s medical and dental history, clinical examination, diagnostic aids, complementary examinations, and from consultations. Students take advantage of opportunities t o exchange recommendations with their peers and leverage the expertise of multiple participants involved in the discussion forum such as biomedical faculty, and faculty from multiple dental disciplines, behavioral sciences, and other health professions. The process consists of presentations to faculty and classmates as part of the process that aims to: (1) agree on diagnoses; (2) establish treatment plan(s) that are reflective of the patient’s values, preferences, and expressed needs, and (3) expected outcomes and prognoses. Additional learning experiences in this course feature students working with a team of classmates (and later present to course faculty and peers) to “solve” assigned case- based challenges, using evidence from peer reviewed literature an d from interdisciplinary consultations.
