CIEN 420
CIVIL ENGINEERING MATERIALS
Universidad Ana G. Méndez-Carolina Campus · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Analysis of mechanical and nonmechanical properties of civil engineering materials. Description of the production process of steel, aluminum, asphalt, composites and Portland cement. Study of the materials structure and bonding at the molecular level. Analysis of the physical behavior of civil engineering materials. Appropriate material selection in the design phase and in the life-cycle cost of engineering facilities. Quality control procedures in the manufacturing and placing of Portland cement concrete and hot mix asphalt. Students will develop the quantitative, technological, communication, and information skills required to analyze and select the civil engineering materials commonly employed in the industry, such as concrete and steel, between others. CIEN 420L CIVIL ENGINEERING MATERIALS LABORATORY 1 CREDIT The course introduces the concepts, techniques, and devices used to measure engineering properties of steel, aluminum, asphalt, and Portland cement. Special emphasis on measurement of load-deformation characteristics and failure modes of materials. Experiments include data collection, data analysis, and interpretation and presentation of results. Students will develop the critical thinking, scientific reasoning, communication, as well a s ethics and diversity skills required to perform tests and analyze the civil engineering materials commonly employed in the industry, such as concrete and steel, between others.
