QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS

This course is designed to provide nursing or advanced practice specialists the opportunity to conceptualize a research problem from a qualitative perspective, study a specific method (grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenology, hermeneutics) and practice qualitative approaches to collection and data analysis in that method. Students will have the opportunity to write a mini proposal guided by a qualitative research question and lead to a specific qualitative research approach to the problem. There will be opportunities to participate in simulated reviews of qualitative research proposals (either as a researcher or as reviewer). It is provided for the development of pilot research strategies to develop a dissertation proposal, if they wish to develop their dissertation, using the qualitative method. The strategies will include interviews, focus groups or participant observation following the selected method. Through this process, students will practice and learn strategies and processes to conceptualize and implement a qualitative study guided by a specific qualitative methodology, making use of programs such as NVivo, QDA Miner Lite, MAXQDA, and ATLAS.ti. It facilitates the development of competencies related to research and evidenced-based practice and information and healthcare technologies.
