This course focuses on the molecular, cellular and tissue-basis of the immune system, recognition, response, and the establishment of the immunological memory. The course begins by recognizing the innate immune system as the first line of defense and then comprehends how that can lead to the activation of adaptive immunity. The immunity mediated by lymphocytes and other cells are studied in detail, conceptualizing and analyzing their maturation, activation, differentiation and immune functions within a molecular and systemic framework. The course also covers issues related to immune tolerance, immunological barriers against graft, resistance to infection by pathogens, cancer immunology, the role of vaccination and other immunotherapies in modulating the immune response, among other topics. Furthermore, it discusses immunological failures that become pathological conditions.
