Catalog description

This course will study the structure and function of the nervous system by examining the molecules, cells and neural circuits that perform the functions of the nervous system. It will study how the nervous system is organized during development, how it changes with experience, how it functions in normal behavior and how it is disrupted during alterations in its function or disease. It will include the following topics: structure and function of neurons; how they are activated, how the electrical impulse propagates and how each neuron communicates with each other; the development of the nervous system; the functioning of the sensory systems: smell, hearing and vision and their processing in the brain; the control of voluntary movement; learning and memory systems; sleep; emotion and motivation; methods used in brain research; and the ethical implications of the potential use of developing treatments.
