EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN FUNDAMENTALS

This course is designed to instruct a student to the level of the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. Course content serves as an introduction to the declarative knowledge and cognitive and affective skills necessary for the provision of emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized emergency medical service. The course is taught in accordance with the latest National EMS Education Standards for the EMTs and in alignment with Chapter 401, Florida Statute s, (F.S.) and Chapter 64J -1, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C). Course content is designed to prepare students to recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care, decide on appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition, work to minimize patient discomfort and prevent further injury, and practice safely and in accordance with the EMT-B role and responsibilities. Corequisite: EMS2110 The course contains: • Two hours of instruction on the trauma scorecard methodologies for assessment of adult trauma patients and pediatric trauma patients as required by section 401.2701, Florida Statutes. • Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) training as required by section 383.3362(3)(a)(b), Florida Statutes. • A comprehensive final written examination evaluating the knowledge and skills described in the most current US DOT National Education Standard EMS2100 EMERGENCY MEDICAL CLINICAL LAB AND EXTERNSHIP—4.5 SEMESTER CREDITS This course is designed to equip the EMT -Basic student with the psychomotor skills necessary for the provision of emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized emergency medical service. The course is taught in accordance with the latest National EMS Education Standards for the EMTs and in alignment with state requirements. It provides a minimum of 40 hours of in -field Basic Life Support training with an Advanced Life Support Agency and an additional 20 hours of hospital-based experience, ten of which occur within the Emergency Room setting.
