Tulane and New Orleans are both famous for their community-centered engagements, but what does “community” really mean? Why is it so important to Tulane and to the city of New Orleans? How can each of us support our community, and why does it matter in the end? This course will explore these questions by introducing you to the basic skills of compassion and care for the community. This course invites you to engage with these questions by introducing the basic skills of compassion and care for the community. You’ll connect with nonprofit organizations and initiatives, visit nursing homes, explore music therapy programs for children and adults, discover the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ community projects, and step into the unique world of the Museum of Death—an institution dedicated to making people happier. Through active engagement with the city’s colorful neighborhoods and diverse cultural spaces, alongside readings and discussions on compassion and care, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of what it means to serve and support a community. This immersive learning experience will challenge you to see, listen, and feel as you learn, showing that education is not just about studying and assignments—it’s about embracing experiences that shape who we are, how we connect with others, and what truly matters. And along the way, you’ll get a good dose of life—and some of the best sips of NOLA coffee!
