So, you’ve heard that New Orleans is a city like no other, full of history and surprises at every turn — but have you ever wondered how its unique geography has shaped the city we see today? This TIDES course uses satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and field observations to explore how New Orleans has changed over time. You will examine the city’s unique landscape—from the Mississippi River to its bayous, wetlands, levees, green spaces, neighborhoods, and coastlines through a visual, beginner-friendly satellite lens and real-world field observations. Using tools like Google Earth, GLOBE, Copernicus and NASA Worldview, you will compare past and present imagery to understand neighborhood development, environmental change, storm impacts, and the factors that shape life in New Orleans today. This course emphasizes collaborative discussion, field observations and reflections.
