Catalog description

This course addresses health and women' s rights around the world from health equity, gender, and ethnicity perspectives. The main topics are: women' s human rights and gender equality, discrimination against women and girls; rights of LGBTI people; gender-based violence; early marriage and pregnancy; right to contraception and abortion; forced sterilizations and abortions, and virginity examinations; female genital mutilation; maternal mortality; sexual transmission of HIV; trafficking of women and girls; women' s rights during complex humanitarian emergencies; migration and reproductive health; and postcolonial feminism and health. The course contextualizes and analyzes: 1 ) health and women' s rights within their economic and political context, 2) the social inequality roots of health and women' s rights issues, and 3 ) the main health and rights challenges faced by women and girls. It uses country case studies from Latin America and other countries around the world. It is open to all undergraduate students
