Instead of the assumption that marriage was to secure property and family alliances, there arose the hope that men and women would find attraction and companionship in marriage. We will look at the process of change in ideas about marriage, the education of women, the right to choose a spouse, romantic love and sexual seduction and practical problems of the division of power in a marriage.
