This graduate seminar provides an in-depth exploration of diverse community-engaged research (CER) methods, examining their theoretical underpinnings, practical applications, and ethical considerations. The course moves beyond a sole focus on community-based participatory research (CBPR) to include other participatory approaches and exploring their usage in research methods. This course is designed for students who intend to undertake in community-engaged research, whether for theses, dissertations, capstone projects, or other scholarly or community-based work. The course will emphasize the importance of equitable partnerships and research resulting in real-world social impact that contributes to social change. Students will develop a full understanding of the various opportunities to couple engaged methods with research design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination, establishing the foundation for future collaborations with community partners and other stakeholders. The course will draw on diverse perspectives from various community-engaged research methodologies, ensuring students are exposed to a range of practices that prioritize community knowledge and empowerment. This course is required prior to applying for the Publicly Engaged Scholarship Certificate program, but open to all graduate students.
