Catalog description

This professional development seminar is for first-year Sociology doctoral students. The pro-seminar will cover a range of topics central to the career development of Sociology students as scholars and researchers. Through classroom participation and assignments, students will learn how to develop a professional curriculum vita; understand and apply the ethical principles of social scientists; find and work with a faculty mentor; develop a dissertation research agenda; cultivate time-management and information-management skills; create an annotated bibliography; and develop a first draft of a dissertation proposal. In addition, workshops on bibliographic software and reference databases will provide students with practical information about conducting literature reviews as the foundation for doing research. Sociology faculty members will come to class each week to provide an expert's perspective on these and other topics. Students should consider each guest faculty member as a potential member of their area exam committee(s) and dissertation committee.
