Struggles for social change are a constant in our history. Some social movements have dramatically changed social relations, while many others appear and disappear without making a discernible impact. How do social scientists understand these dynamics? This course will introduce the study of social movements, broadly defined. The course will cover the major explanations of where, when, and why social movements emerge, grounded in historical and contemporary examples of collective action.
