Theory to Practice: Social and Behavioral Approaches in Public Health

This course introduces advanced social and behavioral sciences in public health, emphasizing appraisal of theories and frameworks that explain health behaviors, social processes, and population health outcomes. Although it serves as an entry point to advanced theoretical work, it assumes prior MPH-level exposure to foundational theory and extends beyond it through deeper critical inquiry, theoretical integration, and scholarly application. Students will assess strengths and limitations of major perspectives, consider how theories operate across ecological levels, and evaluate their relevance for advancing health equity. Through applied exercises, case critiques, and policy analyses, students will translate theoretical insights into public health practice and develop the ability to critically evaluate and apply theories to inform the design and refinement of equitable public health interventions.
