Issues in Black Health Across the Diaspora

The health of Black peoples in the U.S. and across the globe has been of interest to scholars since the late 1800s. With slow progress, the field of public health understands race as a social construct and racism as a root cause of racial health inequities. However, without an in-depth analysis of racism and Black peoples’ lived experiences in our society, public health researchers and practitioners will miss the goal of maximizing Black health and eliminating racial health inequities. Students in this course will analyze various social and structural factors that impact Black health in the U.S. Students will assess intersectional identities across gender and sexuality on Black health. Students will learn about Black cultural healing and health promotion practices.
