The Role of Soils in Riparian Landscapes

Riparian landscapes are the transition zone between wetted areas and the surrounding uplands. These zones buffer coastal features, e.g. tidal creeks, as well as rivers, lakes, and wetlands. A sustainable equilibrium depends on interconnected relationships of soils, plants, nutrients, and flowing water, which causes both erosion and deposition of new soils. Management, restoration, and protection of these domains requires scientists, engineers, and landscape architects to share a common understanding and language. The fundamentals outlined in this course allow for development of an understanding of soils that can be applied to restoration and management projects that find a harmony between the moving water, riparian ecology, and humans.
