Catalog description
Coastal structures play a vital role in protecting shorelines, managing coastal hazards, and supporting maritime activities. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the design, analysis, and construction of various coastal structures, including seawalls, revetments, breakwaters, groins, jetties, and offshore installations. Students will explore fundamental coastal processes such as wave mechanics, tides, storm surges, and sediment transport, as well as how these forces interact with built infrastructure under present day conditions and under changing climatic conditions. The course will cover engineering principles for designing resilient and sustainable structures that mitigate coastal erosion, flooding, and storm damage while considering environmental and economic constraints. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the technical knowledge and problem-solving skills required to design, analyze, and evaluate coastal structures in real-world scenarios.
