River Structures

Catalog description
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of river structures, their design, construction, and maintenance. It integrates fundamentals of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and hydrology with practical applications to water resource management in riverine systems. Key topics include (a) the mechanics of flow in open channels, (b) the interaction of river flows with structures, (c) the design of dams, weirs, floodgates, river diversions, water conveyance structures, and levees, and (d) the analysis of the risk associated with river structures. Students will use fundamental concepts of hydraulics, hydrology, and sediment transport to understand the impacts of hydraulic structures on river morphology, ecology, and surrounding environments.
