Catalog description

When and why do identity groups gain salience in politics? We will explore the factors that give rise to collective identities starting with culture, through institutions, social movements, descriptive representation, and finally, social status. The second part of the course surveys issues related to identity politics and policies: women’s representation, the legalization of same-sex marriage, ethnic voting, and immigrant assimilation vs. integration.
