Catalog description

This course introduces students to college-level writing with an emphasis on basic critical reading, the writing process, and foundational academic skills. Students practice writing clear, well-organized texts while developing an academic voice and control over sentence- and paragraph-level style. For example, emphasis, cohesion, parallelism, figuration, and syntactic variation will be focused on. The course emphasizes drafting, peer review, and revision as central components of effective writing. Multiple drafts are emphasized as crucial to refining and honing grammatical and stylistic skills. Students learn strategies for summarizing and responding to sources in addition to citing others’ work responsibly using MLA conventions. PAEN 1100 prepares students for sustained research-based writing in PAEN 1200 .
