PM&R and Non-Operative Sports Medicine Research

Catalog description

The goal of this elective is to provide fourth year medical students the opportunity to participate in and contribute to ongoing PM&R or non-operative sports medicine research projects. Students will write case studies, generate research abstracts and/or develop a poster presentation by way of the selected research project. Upon completion of the course students will have the foundation for learning effective methods necessary for research and a fundamental knowledge of clinical medicine and academic medicine. As a result of exceptionally completed coursework, students will have the opportunity to be listed as a co-author in the publication of one of the above mentioned writings. Students will choose their research focus (PM&R or non-operative sports medicine) upon enrollment. Upon selection of a research project, the student will be paired with a lead physician researcher. Students work toward the end goal of a published work – case study, abstract, poster presentation, or paper. The elective will provide the medical student with an opportunity to work through the research process with guided feedback. Not only will the students develop research skills, they will learn to effectively communicate research results by way of preparing case studies, generating abstracts/manuscripts and presenting results to others. The students will participate in one-on-one and small group discussion sessions. In addition, students will have to conduct self-directed work sessions to complete the various components of the research project and have the opportunity to present their research results.
