Catalog description

The aim of this course is to introduce graduate students and advanced undergraduates to research and writing about music and sound. We will review specific methods of analysis in the fields of performance, composition, music theory, musicology, ethnomusicology, and sound studies. Students will be introduced to the basic tools of research through reading assignments, guest lectures, and research workshops. Each student will design their own research project that culminates in a piece of original writing about music and/or sound. This course is required for all graduate students in music.
