Catalog description

Analysis, or Form, is the study of the “disposition [of the material] for the construction and development of musical ideas.”1 This course is essentially an in-depth study of harmonic, melodic, contrapuntal, rhythmic, and formal procedures in works selected from a vast array of time periods and musical styles. the Baroque through the Romantic periods that are representative of the common-practice tonal system. This course will incorporate review of harmony & voice-leading principles, the fundamental elements of phrase design, further aspects of phrase design, and important formal constructs of tonal music.
