The purpose of this course is to provide students with an overview of the key institutions and operations of the Spanish legal system and a brief overview of key areas of Spanish private law. Starting with a general analysis of the legal sources and the foundations of codified private law, the course will examine Spain’s lengthy codification process, the seven civil law systems that resulted from it, and how they fit into the current Spanish Constitution. Furthermore, the most defining and distinctive features of the main areas of Spanish private law will be studied: contract law, property law, family law (particularly matrimonial property regimes) and succession law.
