Hot Topics: Breaking Changes in Immigration Law and Policy

Catalog description

This course will examine the shifts in U.S. immigration law and policy expected to take place in real time as the new Administration begins its term. The incoming Administration, asserting a strong mandate based on the prominence of immigration issues in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections, has promised dramatic changes, beginning from inauguration. The changes are likely to feature new travel bans, new limits on access to asylum, a new approach to deportation of those present in this country without authorization, and an end to existing programs set in place to address humanitarian crises. Students will examine these shifts, likely to be in full motion as the course unfolds, in an intensive and interactive setting. Guest speakers will join to help illuminate the complexity of agency decision making, strategies in judicial challenge, and other considerations adjacent to the course topics.
