MICR 4020
Recruiting the Next Generation
Tulane University of Louisiana · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
While undertaking a medical school education, along with the basic sciences and clinical knowledge, students are expected to learn certain “soft skills” that will help with their career as a physician. Students are expected to learn how to engage with a patient to extrapolate the information necessary to aid them in providing the best medical care possible. This includes being an active listener, acting in a professional manner, and become skilled communicator. Along with acquiring the skills necessary to become a good physician, students must have interpersonal skills to do well in an interview setting to match in their chosen specialty. This elective serves as another opportunity to enhance these skills. Learning certain skills Is often enhanced when someone begins to teach and evaluate those skills. By putting the medical student in the role of a patient (SP) and the interviewer, by evaluating someone else’s performance, they begin to evaluate their own abilities as a person providing medical care and being interviewed and improve in those areas. This will benefit the student with future SP encounters, patient encounters, and future residency interviews. Learning will be entirely in a simulated patient (SP) scenario as a patient and in an interview setting as an interviewer. Each student will be assigned to conduct one SP encounter as a patient and conduct one interview as an interviewer on assigned medical school intervIew days. For the SP encounters, the students must read and understand the SP scenario for that day in order to assess the encounter and provide accurate and meaningful feedback, while assessing their communication skills. For the interview, the student must follow the interview prompts in a way so the interview has a casual and natural feel as the goal is to assess interpersonal skills in relation to being a good match in the TUSOM student body.
