With a focus on the role of water management as a primary influence, this course surveys the history of landscape design, and the rise of landscape architecture as a discipline, from early civilizations to the environmental movements in the 20th century. The course progresses both chronologically and thematically, beginning with ancient civilizations’ water infrastructure and moving through the formal gardens of Islamic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. It examines the English landscape movement’s naturalistic approach, colonial water systems, and American civic parks, before concluding with modernist landscapes and contemporary landscape-scale regional and infrastructural planning.
